Summary

MythBusters ’ Adam Savage—Discovery Channel star and one of the most beloved figures in science and tech—shares his golden rules of creativity, from finding inspiration to following through and successfully turning your idea into reality。

Adam Savage is a maker。 From Chewbacca’s bandolier to a thousand-shot Nerf gun, he has built thousands of spectacular projects as a special effects artist and the cohost of MythBusters。 Adam is also an educator, passionate about instilling the principles of making in the next generation of inventors and inspiring them to turn their curiosity into creation。

In this practical and passionate guide, Adam weaves together vivid personal stories, original sketches and photographs from some of his most memorable projects, and interviews with many of his iconic and visionary friends in the arts and sciences—including Pixar director Andrew Stanton, Nick Offerman, Oscar-winner Guillermo Del Toro, artist Tom Sachs, and chef Traci Des Jardins—to demonstrate the many lessons he has picked up from a lifetime of making。

Things like: don’t wait until everything is perfect—in your workshop or in your life—to begin。 Plan with pencil and paper。 Sweep up every day。 Learn from doing。 Share your toys。 There is an exact tool for every task (Adam probably has four of them in his wondrous shop), but if you need to pound in a nail and all you have handy is a skill saw—hammer away。 The most important thing, always, is just that you make something。

Every Tool’s a Hammer is sure to guide and inspire you to build, make, invent, explore, and most of all, enjoy the thrills of being a creator。

A delightful romp into Adam Savage’s coping mechanisms for ADHD and large pragmatic imagination。 He will pad this book, writing is difficult to extend past a point that will not become personal, but the points he brings up are useful and fun。 In a time when destruction seems eminent, I will look for the makers and their imagination and problem solving skills to give me strength。

Interesting book, part bio part advice。

In this book, Adam Savage explores his journey from childhood curiosity to a life spent making, building, producing, writing and otherwise creating compelling pieces from parts or even from scratch。 As a fan of Savage's I think it was really interesting to learn more about his story and to hear the tales of what went very right and what went quite wrong on his journey。 More than that, I think that Savage gives new / young makers the confidence and permission to dive in and start making, combined In this book, Adam Savage explores his journey from childhood curiosity to a life spent making, building, producing, writing and otherwise creating compelling pieces from parts or even from scratch。 As a fan of Savage's I think it was really interesting to learn more about his story and to hear the tales of what went very right and what went quite wrong on his journey。 More than that, I think that Savage gives new / young makers the confidence and permission to dive in and start making, combined with more tactical information about trial and error, favorite tools, process, etc。 Savage has such a dynamic and fun personality that it was interesting to see how much rigor he has developed over the years (checklists, organizational systems, journaling, etc。) to support his maker career。 Overall, this was an interesting book, especially the personal stories。 。。。more

Excellent book for a new maker! Adam has a unique way of talking, which is extended through this book in text format。 I loved the coupling of images and text explanation to convey certain points。 I'll keep this book around to read again after some time。 Excellent book for a new maker! Great advice, though, with the exception of chapter seven, the whole book feels too long。 The examples he takes from his working life aren’t always that illuminative。 Really, you can get the gist of this by reading the first few pages of each chapter and skipping the rest。 But the advice is excellent。 I genuinely take it all to heart, and in the end, that’s what we want from non-fiction like this。

An interesting read。 A combination of autobiography, How-To Manuel and Adam's life philosophy。 If you are a fan of MythBusters this is a must read。 An interesting read。 A combination of autobiography, How-To Manuel and Adam's life philosophy。 If you are a fan of MythBusters this is a must read。 。。。more

Entertaining and enlightening! I appreciated how Adam Savage (the Mythbusters guy!) does not shy away from discussing the nitty gritty details of his successes and learned failures。 Instead of generalizing motivational one-liners, giving real life examples in technical detail proved to be much more memorable and inspirational。

Inspiring, thought provoking and just down right cool。 Such great insight from a true professional and artist。 Mix of narrative and hard take-aways。 Been swooning over AS since I was a child - the infatuation has only grown stronger。 No matter who you do or who you are - this book will teach your something。

For a creative thinker, like myself, this is a great read。 I've always been an Adam Savage fan having grown up with Mythbusters。 This was a good opportunity to see inside his mind and success as a maker。 For a creative thinker, like myself, this is a great read。 I've always been an Adam Savage fan having grown up with Mythbusters。 This was a good opportunity to see inside his mind and success as a maker。 。。。more

Adam Savage is more than a TV personality and a former Mythbuster。 He’s also what’s known these days as a “Maker。” A maker is exactly what it sounds like: he makes things with his hands。 He started out young, making craft projects out of cardboard, and before long, he found himself working in the New York theatre scene as a set builder。 Eventually, his building background helped him find his way to Industrial Light and Magic (Lucasfilm’s special effects group) and then working for Colossal Pictu Adam Savage is more than a TV personality and a former Mythbuster。 He’s also what’s known these days as a “Maker。” A maker is exactly what it sounds like: he makes things with his hands。 He started out young, making craft projects out of cardboard, and before long, he found himself working in the New York theatre scene as a set builder。 Eventually, his building background helped him find his way to Industrial Light and Magic (Lucasfilm’s special effects group) and then working for Colossal Pictures, as an employee of future Mythbuster Jamie Hyneman。This is his first book, and it’s as much a love letter to being a maker as a manifesto for creativity。 He enlists several celebrity makers, including celebrity chef Tracie Des Jardins and actor and woodworker Nick Offerman, to help in his cause to call to arms all makers and creatives, to do what they do and do it better。 He talks about organization, tools, materials, and using what you have when you don’t have what you need (hence the title of the book)。 For a creative like me, this was a call to action, and a good part of the reason why I’ve begun writing again。If you make things, and I mean anything, with your hands, you should read this。 。。。more

A must read for any type of maker! Although, the maker that would benefit the most from this book is the model maker/prop maker。 Most of Adam's projects are in that realm and the majority of his tips and stories revolve around prop/model making。Basic knowledge about Mythbusters and Adam / Jamie is probably recommended for this book but not required。 You will still get a lot out of the book but some of the stories he shares might not mean as much to you if you are not familiar with Mythbusters。 H A must read for any type of maker! Great book! Interesting perspectives on creative process and tooling。 At the same time he broadens the creative aspect to include more and more people, much of the tooling presented is really for physical making。 During reading many thoughts came up on doing somethings different, which is cool!

Awesome book。 It is both entertaining and practical。 A wonderful source of inspiration for anyone who desires to create。 This book earned a spot in my permanent collection。。。 which is kept to 1 shelf。

Adam Savage is one of my role models and I really liked how I could feel his excitement and passion emanating from the pages of this book。 I learned a lot from him, and it has definitely motivated me to get back into making things!

I loved this。 It actually makes me miss creating props and my time in the theater。 I'd never taken that close of a look at how I work and how I organize, but this book resonated with me on multiple levels about workspace and how I think- and I love the lists and plan to incorporate more of them! Not to mention, I loved Mythbusters so it was a fun audiobook with awesome behind the scenes tidbits I loved this。 It actually makes me miss creating props and my time in the theater。 I'd never taken that close of a look at how I work and how I organize, but this book resonated with me on multiple levels about workspace and how I think- and I love the lists and plan to incorporate more of them! Not to mention, I loved Mythbusters so it was a fun audiobook with awesome behind the scenes tidbits 。。。more

This book works on multiple levels。 It is a fun memoir from Adam Savage。 It is a love letter to making and creativity。 It is a practical guide to making。 AND it is one of the best books on project management I have read。 I highly recommend this book!

I thought this was fascinating because his impulses/interests were so far out of my wheelhouse。 I personally have a hard time fathoming becoming obsessed with recreating a movie lunchbox or spending four years on making a replica glove。 I enjoyed the way he was always trying to optimize his workspace and habits, as well as the importance he placed on collaboration。 I also never realized that there were quite so many types of glue in existence。

A good book to read or listen to for any creative or maker。 Much of Adam’s advice about planning, drafting and organizing your workspace can apply regardless of your medium。 I particularly loved his chapter on sharing your work, as that is something I struggle with。

A whole chapter on lists?! This alone made me really happy。 I enjoyed Adam's tone throughout this book。 Although I don't make things in the same sense that he does, I agree with him, we are all makers。 A whole chapter on lists?! Not the most amazing celebrity non-fiction you'll ever read, and not the typical life story you get from a memoir or autobiography。 I was initially not very engaged by the intense focus on this persistent discussion on the topic of "making," but by the second half I was actually settling into the fact that I was reading a tips and tricks how-to book by a celebrity rather than an entertaining book about a celebrity。 In the end I came to realize that, for better or worse, I have many of the same t Not the most amazing celebrity non-fiction you'll ever read, and not the typical life story you get from a memoir or autobiography。 I was initially not very engaged by the intense focus on this persistent discussion on the topic of "making," but by the second half I was actually settling into the fact that I was reading a tips and tricks how-to book by a celebrity rather than an entertaining book about a celebrity。 In the end I came to realize that, for better or worse, I have many of the same traits as Adam Savage。 I embrace the concept of just starting somewhere, using cardboard, figure it out, then iterate。 I love lining my tools up in perfect lines and at right angles。 I often make arbitrary race goal deadlines for myself and perform mid-stream mental math to see if I am beating the pace (just like Principal Skinner dribbling a basketball while trapped in his garage under a mountain of old newspapers)。 And I have gone through that learning process of needing to slow down, measure twice, and make your space accessible and workable (although I can't say I sweep up every night as he recommends)。 So overall I enjoyed seeing that you can become a success even with the frenetic style (as opposed to the perpetually superior plodding and well-planned Jaime Hyneman style), I loved learning that baking soda speeds and improves super glue setting, and I'm energized again to just go start making something that pops in my head! 。。。more
